Anaesthesiology, Resuscitation and Pain Medicine

Fundació Puigvert’s anaesthesia, resuscitation and pain medicine service specialises in caring for patients in the hospital’s fields of specialisation. It broadens knowledge and provides support for the institution’s other services through multidisciplinary teams. Its mission is to accompany, oversee and protect our patients at all times in the event of surgery or diagnostic tests that require anaesthesia. From the preoperative stage to the surgery or the diagnostic test and in the intermediate care unit. All of this is done in collaboration with a nursing team who are highly qualified in anaesthesiology and resuscitation. During the initial visit, in addition to the medical study, all relevant information is collected regarding the patient’s general state of health, and any questions about the procedure are answered. The main healthcare areas that this service covers are:

  • Assessment of risks of anaesthesia and surgery
  • Surgical anaesthesia
  • Postoperative resuscitation (postoperative intensive care unit)
  • Pain clinic

Medical Documentation

The main purpose of the medical documentation service is to ensure that clinical histories are unique, integral, secure and of good quality so that they may be useful tools for patient care. The service also provides support for research, teaching, quality assessment, clinical management and legal matters. The service is comprised of three units:

  • The Archives Unit oversees the quality of data of clinical histories, it digitalises documents and incorporates them in electronic clinical histories, and it provides support for healthcare staff, teaching and research.
  • The Reports Secretariat oversees patients’ right to access their clinical histories, providing them with copies of clinical documents and managing medical reports on request.
  • The Documentation Unit manages clinical information for the institution’s growing demand for data, as well as for national and international administrations and agencies.

Clinical Psychology

The clinical psychology service collaborates with the services of urology, nephrology, andrology and reproductive medicine to enhance patient-oriented integral healthcare, including the consideration of biological, psychological and societal factors that have a bearing on the health problem. The service is provided by a team of eight persons, four of which are resident interns training to be psychotherapists. The care they provide consists of psychosocial assessments and indications of patients’ psychological procedures and their familial context, as well as providing support for medical teams who are dealing with clinical situations of great emotional complexity. Each psychological procedure is specially designed for its healthcare context. A model of psychotherapeutic thinking is used to design the procedures, which may be adopted in different forms: emotional contention; psychotherapeutic advice and/or psychotherapy; applied individually, to couples or to groups; for outpatient and/or hospital use. We provide needed psychological support for patients, for socio-familial contexts and for healthcare teams in order to obtain the best clinical results.

Radiodiagnostics

With a team comprised of 40 professionals, including 10 specialists in radiology, eight in nursing and 15 in diagnostic imaging, the radiodiagnostics service is equipped to provide over 150 types of diagnostic tests and procedures involving interventional radiology. Hence, the service provides support for the hospital’s different specialities, generating some 20,000 image diagnoses per year. We are equipped to perform lithotripsies, CT scans, Doppler ultrasonographies and radiographies, among other procedures.

Service director: Dr Mª José Martínez Barcina

Urgent Care

Our urgent-care service receives patients 24 hours a day every day of the year to care for urgent health problems that fall within our fields of specialisation. Fundació Puigvert has four installations for this service and receives around 20,000 urgent-care patients per year. At present, the service is provided by general urgent-care professionals, who specialise in urological, andrological or nephrological pathologies, although patients’ overall conditions are considered, with the help of urology and nephrology resident interns and those of other cross-cutting medical services:

  • Radiodiagnostics
  • Laboratory
  • Hospital Pharmacy
  • All the staff of Fundació Puigvert

As the urgent-care service is part of a single-speciality centre, the pathologies it treats are highly specific. A team of medical and nursing professionals, as well as healthcare and administrative auxiliary staff, comprise a focused unit dedicated to providing the best possible care. An urgent-care service will function properly only when all staff work with the same criteria.
