We provide groundbreaking care of clinical excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of any kidney disorder, including orphan kidney diseases. As the driving force behind the living donor kidney transplant programme in Spain, we are currently a benchmark centre, accredited by the Catalan Transplant Organisation (OCATT) and the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), for both cadaver and living kidney transplantation. 400;">We continuously monitor more than 200 patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and we have an advanced dialysis unit and a specific unit for high blood pressure (HBP), diabetes and the prevention of kidney damage. We also care for more than 1,500 patients with orphan or complex kidney diseases that require highly specialised medical care.

Department Director: Dr Lluís Guirado Perich

Units of Nephrology

Dialysis Unit

The new Advanced Dialysis Unit, which was inaugurated in April 2022, features the best technology and specialised services for the treatment of patients with acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease at different stages of their course.

The new Advanced Dialysis Unit, which was inaugurated in April 2022, features the best technology and specialised services for the treatment of patients with acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease at different stages of their course.

It provides care to patients with advanced chronic kidney damage, including those requiring dialysis support treatment in its different modes: hospital haemodialysis, home haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

It also coordinates the Nephrology Day Hospital, the treatment programme using apheresis techniques and care for critically ill patients with acute renal disease.

Clinical Nephrology Unit

At the Clinical Nephrology Unit, we diagnose, treat and follow up, in the short and long term, patients with acute and chronic kidney failure, as well as patients with orphan kidney diseases (glomerular and inherited), while covering all types of medical kidney conditions.

The relationship with primary care teams is one of the most important spheres of activity, as we have featured an integrated care programme for people with kidney diseases for more than 20 years.
Kidney Transplant Unit

The Kidney Transplant Unit performs kidney transplantations from both deceased and living donors, while carrying out all types of transplantations: from direct transplantations between relatives, partners or friends to cross-over transplantations, transplant chains and even transplants from altruistic individuals.

The Kidney Transplant Unit performs kidney transplantations from both deceased and living donors, while carrying out all types of transplantations: from direct transplantations between relatives, partners or friends to cross-over transplantations, transplant chains and even transplants from altruistic individuals. We also perform living donor transplantations in patients with incompatible blood group, sensitised patients, patients with expanded criteria or asystole.

Currently, more than 70% of living donor kidney transplants are performed with robot-assisted surgery, a minimally invasive surgical technique that provides an array of benefits for the patient, as it minimises complications, involves less postoperative pain and promotes recovery.

"The Kidney Transplant Unit has performed more than 2.000 transplantations in the last 25 years"
Molecular Genetics Laboratory

Our diagnostic approach is based on the massive sequencing of a large gene panel of our own design, which has proven to have the best diagnostic performance, as per the scientific literature published. We feature a huge clinical and genomic database of patients with these disorders, which is key to correctly interpret genomic data.

Genetic diagnosis of inherited kidney diseases and male infertility allows for a final aetiological diagnosis by identifying their molecular cause. This guides us in assessing the patient's clinical manifestations, in their management and therapeutic options, which is the basis of predictive and customised medicine. Another key point of genetic diagnosis is that it allows us to offer accurate genetic counselling for both the patient and their relatives.

We boast more than 20 years of experience in genetic diagnosis and research into inherited kidney diseases and male infertility.

Genetics in accurate diagnoses

Inherited Kidney Diseases (HKD) are the main cause of chronic kidney disease in childhood and in 15–20% of adult patients. However, about half of the people suffering from these diseases are undiagnosed, whereas their symptoms are often poorly recognisable in the early stages. The Fundació Puigvert features extensive clinical experience in these diseases, as well as a Genetics and Molecular Biology Laboratory, to diagnose orphan kidney diseases with a genetic cause.

Glomerular diseases specialists

We are a Benchmark Unit of the National Health System (CSUR), in Catalonia (XUEC) and Europe (ERKnet) for complex glomerular diseases. We have recently held the 28th Nephrology Course, a triennial medical-scientific meeting that is organised by the Fundació's Nephrology Department and has become a national benchmark. This time, a group of internationally renowned trailblazers in glomerular diseases and onconephrology, both for their clinical contributions and their dissemination work, have come together.
