Biografía

Dr Javier Ponce de León is the Head of the Reconstructive and General Urology Unit.

He holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery and is a medical specialist in Urology through MIR residency (1990 – 1994). He also holds a PhD in Medicine and Surgery with a Cum Laude qualification and was awarded the prize for the best doctoral thesis by the Catalan Society of Urology (2011).

He features more than 25 years' experience in the profession and extensive training in different specialty areas. Specifically, he is an expert in complex ureteroplasty using grafts and flaps, surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia through any access, prostatitis, ureteral stricture by laparoscopy, nephrectomy by laparoscopy and endourology.

Moreover, his current work lines are technology applied to surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia and the effect of ureteroplasty on male sexuality.

Throughout his career he has combined his healthcare work and teaching, while tutoring residents at Fundació Puigvert. Likewise, he has also developed an important research and dissemination work as the author of more than 100 scientific articles in national and international journals, as well as book chapters.

His medical and research work has been recognised on several occasions with different awards. He also holds important positions in national scientific societies as the National Coordinator of the Reconstructive Urology Group and the Reconstructive Urology Surgery Group of the Spanish Association of Urology.

Actividad docente y científica

Resident tutor at Fundació Puigvert. External accreditation by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Regional Government of Catalonia) as an official tutor for Urology residents (2007 – present).
Author of more than 100 scientific articles in national and international journals, as well as book chapters.

Coordinator of the Reconstructive Urology Group of the Spanish Association of Urology.

Member of the Catalan Society of Urology.
First board member in Barcelona of the Catalan Society of Urology (2001 – 2005).
Professors S. Gil Vernet and J.M. Gil Vernet Vila Award of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Barcelona (1986).
Abbot Urology 93 Award at the 59th National Congress of the Spanish Association of Urology (1994).
E. Pérez Castro Award for the article "Laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy for kidney transplantation. The first two years of experience" by Archivos Españoles de Urología (2005).
Ernest Lluch Research Award from the Agency for the Assessment of Medical Technology and Research (AATRM) 436/05/2006.
Award for the best doctoral thesis of the Catalan Society of Urology 2011. "Effect of anterior urethral urethroplasty on male sexuality".
Fundació Puigvert Award from the Royal Academy of Medicine of Barcelona (2011).
