Biografía

Dr Joan Palou is the Director of the Urology Department.

With his more than 30 years of experience and extensive training in oncological urology, he stands out among the international scientific community in the treatment of bladder and prostate cancer.

As a pioneer in using robot-assisted surgery and urological laparoscopy in our country, he was the first urologist in Spain to perform a robot-assisted radical cystectomy in 2008, whereas, in 2009, he carried out a bladder and urethra reconstruction from the small intestine, hence allowing the patient to maintain sphincter function. In 2022, Dr Palou's team performed the world's first radical cystectomy with the new cutting-edge HUGO™ surgical robot.

Actividad docente y científica

Associate Professor of Urology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).
Author of more than 400 publications in indexed urological journals and over 25 chapters in books on medicine and urology.
Member of the editorial board of several national and international journals.
He has given more than 300 lectures at national and international meetings.
Visiting professor at university hospitals all over the world.
He has performed many live laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgeries in national and international forums.

Member of the Spanish Association of Urology (AEU).
Member of the European Association of Urology (EAU).
Founding member of the group in charge of the "Guidelines in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer" by the EAU.
Member of the American Urological Association (AUA).
Member of the Société Internationale d'Urologie (International Society of Urology, SIU).
