Biografía

Dr Ana Polo is the Director of the Reproductive Medicine Department at Fundació Puigvert-Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau.

She graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and is a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology after a residency of 4 years at the Vall d'Hebron Maternity and Children's Hospital in Barcelona. 

She has extensive training and experience in different areas of her specialty. She has completed several training stays at universities and centres of international prestige, such as the University of San Francisco (UCSF) and the University of California (UCLA) in Los Angeles, where she completed a Clinical Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the UCLA with Professor Alan H. DeCherney (2000-2002), at the Jessop Wing Centre for Reproductive Medicine and Fertility, Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield and at the UZ Brussels Centrum voor Reproductieve Geneeskunde in Belgium. 

As an expert in assisted reproduction, her main areas of interest are reproductive health, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, in vitro fertilisation, artificial insemination, fertility preservation for medical (oncological) or elective reasons, obesity and fertility and reproductive endocrinology.

Actividad docente y científica

Stays abroad: 2000-2002 Clinical Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) with Professor Alan H. DeCherney.
Associate professor of the Faculty of Medicine at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Classes taught through blended learning (2017 – present).
Lecturer in the different editions of the Master's Degree in Clinical Andrology at Fundació Puigvert (2012 – present).
Research associate of a RETIC (Thematic Networks of Cooperative Health Research) (16/0022) called Maternal and Child Health and Development Network (SAMID), Jan 2018.
Currently, FIS (Fund for Health Research) grant, awarded within the framework of the National R&D&I Plan, entitled: "Impact of exercise and Mediterranean diet versus aspirin on live birth rate and cardiovascular programming in in vitro fertilisation: a randomised study (2020).”
Author of more than 150 oral presentations and posters at national and international congresses and over 50 publications in books and journals.
More than 100 lectures in master's classes, courses, congresses, as well as national and international scientific meetings.
Director of different courses for specialists in assisted reproduction.

Distinciones

Member of the Catalan Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (SCOG).
Member of the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF).
Member of the ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology).
Member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).
1st authorisation by the National Commission on Assisted Human Reproduction to perform a PGD on a carrier of the inherited breast cancer gene after a thorough assessment of the case. First case with this indication to be authorised in Spain, involving Dr Polo and Dr Martínez as members of the Assisted Reproduction team at the Hospital Sant Pau – Fundació Puigvert (2009).
Extraordinary Prize for her degree in Medicine and Surgery (1993).
